A practicing oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. William E. Thornton has distinguished himself in a broad range of professional, civic and community endeavors.

Dr. Thornton was appointed the founding Chair of the Alamo RMA Board of Directors by Governor Rick Perry.

Dr. Thornton was elected Mayor of the City of San Antonio on June 1, 1995, after serving four years on the City Council.

In November 1996, due to his dedication and commitment to public service, Dr. Thornton was elected President of the Texas Municipal League, a position no other Mayor of San Antonio has since held.

Dr. Thornton has also served with the National League of Cities, in a number of capacities, and served on the national Board of Directors for the National League of Cities.

He continues to lecture and was a former clinical professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Thornton has served in a number of community leadership roles, including Chairman of the Bexar
County Hospital District from 1981 to 1991, Chairman of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce in 1989, and Chairman of the Health Care Commission.

His vast community involvement has included leadership roles with the San Antonio Symphony Society, Trinity Baptist Church, American Red Cross, United Way, American Cancer Society and the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
